You’ve been reading some very heavy posts lately, and I don’t want to wear out my welcome. So I’m giving you the day off. Thanks for visiting with me every Friday. I love our discussions, but now it’s time to take a break.
Before you go, though, here are some suggestions from Dr. Daniel Amen (Change Your Brain, Change Your Life). These are excerpted from “A Summary of Ways to Optimize Brain Function and Break Bad Brain Habits.”
- Spend time with positive uplifting people. Spend time with people you want to be like. (We tend to become like the people with whom we hang out.)
- Surround yourself with delightful fragrances and aromas. (The sense of smell bypasses analysis by the cerebral cortex and goes directly to the deep limbic area of the brain, producing feelings and emotions.)
- Exercise, learn diaphragmatic breathing, and meditate on a daily basis (to calm the anxiety centers of the brain).
- Develop clear goals for your life and reaffirm them every day.
- Sing, hum, listen to uplifting music, and move in rhythm as often as possible.
Now, go play. See you next Friday.

Lynne, I have a wordpress account per my website shown here. Why do i have to confirm my request to be notified of follow-up comments for each of your posts that I comment on?
Strange.
Lynne Spreen says
Hi Ann, isn’t that frustrating? It’s the same for me, when I comment on other people’s wordpress blogs. Like you, I have to “subscribe” to each post. Sometimes I go onto my WP dashboard to manage them and it’s shocking how many “subscriptions” I have.
Of course, when I consider that I grew up with White-Out, carbon paper, party lines, and transistor radios, it’s like rich girls’ problems! How far we’ve come. How sophisticated we are now. I thought of this recently when my internet speed slowed down. I was complaining to my husband about it, and then we both started laughing.
ann marquette says
I know about the long list of subscriptions. Sometimes I go in and delete those with have had no comments in a very long time.
I don’t mind requesting “follow-up comments” to posts from bloggers I have subscribed to. However, it is silly to get an email requesting “confirm” the request/submission to get “follow-up” comments where I have left comments!!
ann marquette says
Very wise and thank you.

Hi Lynne!
Just want you to know that I have been “quietly” following all of your incredible, thought-provoking and healing messages lately. Your courage, authenticity, maturity and willingness to share is inspiring, uplifting and very much appreciated.
You mentioned the work of Dr. Daniel Amen today. His name is mentioned in an amazing little book that I am currently reading:
10 MINDFUL MINUTES (Giving Our Children – and Ourselves – the Social and Emotional Skills to Reduce Stress and Anxiety for Healthier and Happier Lives)
by Goldie Hawn
(This book, Goldie Hawn’s foundation and her work with the “MindUP Program” really resonate with me, having 3 ~ soon to be 4 ~ grandchildren…ages 5 and under.)
After all…”It’s never too late to have a happy childhood!”
(Claudia Black…a founder of the ACOA movement.)

Sue! It’s so great to hear from you. Thanks for your kind words. I saw Gloria Steinem speak last night, and she said probably a third of the people in the room had been victims of abuse. So many of us are looking for that happy childhood. Thanks to Dr. Amen and others, I’m finding mine! And thanks for the references to Goldie and Ms. Black.
