I feel left behind when I see those up-and-comer headlines, like “40 Under 40!” listing young people who are expected to set the world on fire.
People my age aren’t under consideration anymore, and that says little is expected of us.
So I was tickled to see “80 over 80: Slate’s Annual List of the Most Influential Octogenarians in America (and 79ers to watch).” Click on over and feel inspired. UPDATE: THAT LINK HAS BEEN DISABLED, SORRY. But it was a darn good idea in 2010.
PS This is my 100th blog post!

Marina, forty is a great age, I think, because you’re finally at a pretty kick-ass level of confidence, of knowing who you are. Have fun! And Kathy, glad to see you’re still out and about. Best wishes, sistahs.

To anwer the above question: because men are still breaking ground in highly recognized fields, and few women get there — for many different reasons. Which we will have to change, of course.
But — Congratulations on your 100th post, Lynne. Great feat!
I cannot wait to turn forty — in July. Every woman I know is groaning at the prospect for themselves, but I have wanted to be forty for the past 20 years. I always figured I would find myself at this age — be successful at accomplishing something worthwhile. Not there yet, but we shall see.

Great question, Debbie. And I think we know the answer 🙁

Congrats on your 100th blog post — go have some blogaversary cake!! And thanks for pointing out this listing. It shows that folks don’t have to retire when they reach “a certain age,” nor do they have to spend the rest of their lives in a rocking chair. But something struck me as odd — since women are supposed to out-live men, how come so few women made the list???
