Geez, I’m tryin’ to write, here.
Fires, power shut-offs, drought, hurricanes, flash flooding, anarchy…do you think we’re building resiliency?
As I’m packing for the funeral trip to North Dakota, I’m wondering if I should toss my computers and important papers in a big suitcase, ready in case Bill has to evacuate. (He’s staying home.) I’m probably overreacting. The fire would have to take out the entire city before it reached us. But see: Santa Rosa, 2017.
And the heat wave just keeps coming. It’s SO HOT. I mean, we’re used to heat, but it usually cools off at night. Not for the past week. And even if it did, the air is smoky. The utility companies want us to cut back usage, and we’re doing all we can, but that’s another Sword of Damocles hanging over our heads.
It’s hard to write. Hard to think about work when you have all this going on.
But then, there’s this.
It’s the first time in 25 years our area will be hit with significant rainfall from a Mexican hurricane. And all I can think is, thank God. Let it come. Because that fire is said to be “expanding in all directions,” and one of them is the city of Hemet and all its outlying neighborhoods.
Cross fingers or pray, whatever you do, it’ll be appreciated.
Meanwhile, I’ll try to write. And pack. And be ready for whatever comes next.
