A midlife fiction book recommendation
Three lifelong friends meet in France to relax and reconnect, but nothing works out as expected.
Bea is the narrator. She’s in her 60s, a famous novelist under deadline and bored with her latest book. Audrie lives in France with her husband Victor, and has become famous for her television show about remodeling a decrepit chateau, now the showplace where the friends gather. Gin is the third friend; she’s been married numerous times; the last husband left her wealthy and she’s flitting from country to country as she pleases. The first two-thirds of the story center around the chateau and the conflict caused by Victor’s impending retirement. He and Audrie also wrangle with their impulsive, disruptive adult son. Eventually, Gin leaves for another country and Bea accepts the invitation of Victor’s friend, Laurent, to stay at his mansion overlooking the ocean. This is where the romance really takes off.
This story was more comic entertainment than traditional romance, and it’s flat-out hilarious. I literally laughed out loud at some of the passages. Having said that, it’s not a flip read. There are nuggets of wisdom repeatedly highlighted by readers, including this one. Also, the descriptions of the food and scenery, the homes and the landscape, are stunning. A very enjoyable read. 4 of 5 stars. To see more on Amazon, go to https://www.amazon.com/Old-Friends-Reunited-laugh-out-loud-bestseller-ebook/dp/B09RHYNCQ2/
